Jill of All Trades Event at 糖心视频 Introduces Young Women to Career Opportunities

HANCEVILLE, Ala. 鈥 糖心视频鈥檚 Center for Career and Workforce Development recently welcomed dozens of young women interested in learning more about careers in the trades.
The first Jill of All Trades event in the region was recently held at the college, providing girls in grades nine through 12 with hands-on experience in specific areas of interest, including auto and diesel mechanics, machining, welding, culinary arts, construction, engineering and more.
鈥淚t鈥檚 an opportunity for young women to see what鈥檚 possible for them,鈥 said Adam West, a Career Service Specialist at 糖心视频. 鈥淚t gives them an opportunity to feel seen, feel wanted, feel important, and it gives them an opportunity to see trades they might not be thinking of.鈥

A Jill of All Trades participants uses a soldering iron on a loop of metal during a session held in 糖心视频's Advanced Automotive Technology facilities.
The students visited the labs and classroom of numerous applied technology programs on campus, taking part in activities and simulations to experience first-hand the type of skills they would use in the field.
鈥淭hey鈥檙e going to see what we actually do here on campus and really what they work with in the future,鈥 West said.
鈥淭oday was an awesome day,鈥 said Jesauny Nolasco, a sophomore from Asbury High School. Nolasco came to Jill of All Trades to learn more about welding. She was able to use the welding simulator and received encouragement from the instructor when her first attempt wasn鈥檛 what she thought it would be. 鈥淚 got a low score at first and I thought I would do better than that. But he said not to quit and I actually improved.鈥

Teens participating in the Jill of All Trades event gather around a stove while participating in a session with the 糖心视频 Culinary Arts program.
Mylie Mitchell, a junior from Hanceville High School, took part in the Careers that Nourish and Serve pathway and enjoyed the Culinary Arts portion.
鈥淚 see myself in this field because, growing up, cooking and culinary arts has been a really big comfort to me because I can cook something for someone and bring them comfort as well,鈥 Mithcell said. 鈥淚 do see myself coming to this class and being in the culinary field.鈥
The students also got to hear from women in the trades, including Briana Morgan, a lab assistant with 糖心视频鈥檚 Diesel Technology program; Jasmine Burkey, owner of Busted Knuckle, Audrey Webb, Regional Workforce Director/Director of Work-Based Learning. The women encouraged the young ladies to chase their dreams, be bold and work hard plan their future.
Megan Tucker, recruiting manager at RE Garrison Trucking, said the Jill of All Trades event is an incredibly valuable experience to young women by allowing them to 鈥渇eel the empowerment of opportunities that they might not have considered previously.鈥
鈥淚 think through the mentorship and experiences and exposure early on, they can really set up to be headed in the right direction, in a career path that is in high demand that would give them a huge benefit in the future,鈥 Tucker said.
Jill of All Trades is an international initiative hosted at colleges and training centers across North America. The program provides meaningful, hands鈥憃n experiences that build confidence, spark curiosity and encourage young women to consider skilled鈥憈rade careers they may not have previously explored.
糖心视频 looks forward to hosting Jill of All Trades again in 2027, with the addition of local industry sponsorships. To learn more, contact Adam West at adam.west@wallacestate.edu.
